Alan N. Trefler (born March 10, 1956) is an American billionaire businessman and chess master[2] best known as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Pegasystems,[3] a multinational software company he founded in 1983.[4] Prior to Pegasystems, in 1975 Trefler tied for first place in the World Open Chess Championship with grandmaster Pal Benko,[2] afterwards working as a software engineer for Casher Associates and TMI Systems.[4] Founding Pegasystems at the age of 27,[5] he took the company Public company in 1996,[6] with Trefler remaining clerk and president until 1999[4] and afterwards becoming CEO.[3] With a 52 percent ownership stake in Pegasystems, his net worth surpassed $1 billion in 2013[7] and in March 2017 he appeared on the ForbesBillionaire's List for the first time.[8] In 2014 he authored the book Build for Change, which addresses changing consumer markets.[9] Involved in philanthropy, in 1997 he established the Trefler Foundation.[10]

Early life and education[edit]

Pega is the recognized leader in Digital Process Automation, CRM, Case Management, Real-Time Decisioning, Robotic Automation and other technologies. As a result, current demand for trained and certified resources is extremely high. Pega meets that need by offering the Pega University Program with curriculum that uses Pega as the chosen technology.

Alan Trefler was born to a Jewish family in 1956[7] in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Dorothy (née Pugatch) and Eric Trefler.[11] Trefler was raised in Brookline, Massachusetts[5] with his brother Leon.[7][12] His mother, a daughter of immigrants from Eastern Europe,[11] worked as a schoolteacher.[7] His father, a Holocaust survivor who came to the United States[5] from Poland after World War II,[13] owned and operated Trefler's, a restorer of art and furniture.[14][15] Working at his family's store while young[5][12] and starting to play chess around the age of seven,[16][13] Trefler would later become high school chess champion of Massachusetts[13] and win various regional competitions.[15] He graduated from Brookline High School[5] in 1973.[17] Trefler went on to Dartmouth College, where he studied economics and computer science[7] and remained active in chess.[18][7] At the age of 19,[12] in 1975 he tied for first place in the World Open Chess Championship[18][7] in New York with grandmaster Pal Benko.[13][2] Also at Dartmouth, he was the winner of the John G. Kemeny prize in computing.[4] He graduated with a BS in 1977.[7]

Software engineering[edit]

Although he attained the level of chess master[12] and considered going professional,[15] after Trefler graduated from Dartmouth he moved into software engineering instead.[12] In the early 1980s he developed computer systems that could play chess,[19] later applying the same business techniques to teaching computers how to process business rules.[12] Between 1978 and 1980[17] Trefler was a senior project manager for Casher Associates Inc., a business process management company in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.[4] He then worked at TMI Systems, where he led the development of their funds transfer product[4] from 1980 to 1983.[17]

Founder of Pegasystems[edit]

He founded Pegasystems in April 1983, taking on the roles of CEO and chairman[4] at the age of 27.[5] Expressing frustration with the 'primitive' computer systems available for companies such as banks and insurance companies,[13] he states that 'when I started Pega, it was with the vision that we could create a set of metaphors –an intermediate visual language that would enable business people to more directly instruct the machine... [and] get the computer to really understand how business people wanted things to work.... And it turns out to be a fairly hard problem to solve.'[19] Basing the company in Cambridge, Massachusetts[5] with Citibank as his first client,[12] during the company's early years Trefler focused on providing case management for companies such as American Express.[19]

The company went public in 1996[6] on NASDAQ.[19] Inventing a number of patents for use in Pegasystems' software architecture,[4] in 1998 Trefler was granted a United States patent for Pegasystems' distinctive rules-based architecture,[12] which provides the framework for Pegasystems' business process management (BPM) solutions.[20] Trefler remained clerk of Pegasystems Inc. until June 1999, and president until October 1999.[4] He remained CEO and chairman of the company's board of directors.[3]

Recent work at Pegasystems[edit]

In 2009 Trefler won the Stevie Award for Computer Software CEO of the Year at the American Business Awards.[21][22] In March 2010, Pegasystems acquired Chordiant for around $161.5 million,[23] which gave Pegasystems access to new markets such as telecommunications and healthcare.[24] The Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council named him their Public Company CEO of the Year in 2011.[22] With a 52 percent ownership stake in Pegasystems,[5][7] his net worth surpassed $1 billion on November 25, 2013.[7] His Pegasystems salary was $751,526 in 2014.[25] That year, Business Insider ranked him the 8th lowest paid CEO in the tech industry.[26]

In 2014 he authored and published Build for Change, a book focused on the management of customers and business processes. A Forbes contributor related that the book made 'a convincing argument' that companies needed to prepare for changes in customer behavior, or face negative repercussions.[9]

Pegasystems had 3,000 employees, 30 offices, and 'more than half a billion dollars in revenue' by early 2015.[19] In 2015, courts ruled in Trefler's and Pegasystems' favor in a copyright infringement suit filed by YYZ, a company the press described as a patent troll.[27] Trefler has been recognized by the Babson College Academy of Distinguished Entrepreneurs,[4] and he speaks publicly on business and software topics at various events and conferences. Among other publications, he has appeared in Barron's, the BBC, Forbes, Fortune, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters,[4] and Bloomberg Television.[28] Trefler made the ForbesBillionaire's List in March 2017.[8]

Chess career[edit]

A master-level chess player[12][2] who had been playing chess since his childhood,[13][16] Trefler competed in the 1975 World Open Chess Championship in New York City. Still a college student at Dartmouth, he entered the tournament with a 2075 Elo rating, 125 points below the lowest master-rated player, ranking him 115th overall in the tournament.[18] He went on to be crowned co-champion along with International GrandmasterPal Benko,[22][18] who was rated at 2504. Trefler also placed ahead of Grandmasters such as Walter Browne and Nicolas Rossolimo, as well as future Grandmaster Michael Rohde.[18] Trefler competed in a charity chess tournament in 2010 alongside grandmasters such as Garry Kasparov[7] and Boaz Weinstein.[2]

Philanthropy[edit]

Trefler and his wife donated $1 million to Dorchester High School in Dorchester, Boston in 1995.[29] They established The Trefler Foundation[12] in 1997,[10] which seeks to improve urban public education[16] in the Boston area.[12] The Treflers were early supporters of the nonprofit Year Up,[10] and in 2015 they founded Union & Fifth, where proceeds raised from donated clothes benefit various charities.[30]

Personal life[edit]

Trefler married his wife Pamela Reinhard in 1992, who at the time was working as an investment banker.[29][31] The couple reside in Brookline, Massachusetts.[7]

Introduction

In the previous post we saw how Pega can consume message from an external Kafka server. In this post we will see how Pega can produce the Kafka messages to an external Kafka server.

A banking organization ABC uses Pega infinity to facilitate their sales process.

  • Whenever a loan is issued, loan details are captured in a Pega application that maintains the loan life cycle. .

Business problem

Whenever a loan is fully settled, the loan status is updated in the golden source system ( Pega application) but the changes need to be propagated to all systems that use the loan status to make them up-to-date.

Solution

Kafka is chosen as the messaging platform. Whenever the loan expires, the Pega application produces loan status message to a dedicated topic. Other applications can register themselves as one of the consumers and consume the loan status change messages.

Let’s see how we can implement the scenario in Pega.

In the tutorial, we will see how this can be achieved using the>

  • Please follow the below post to set up connection between Pega and an external kafka server.
  • 2. A Loan processing case type if created with a simple UI to capture the Loan number and loan status.

    Configure Kafka data set in Pega

    Step 1: Create the data model for your Kafka Integration.

    Note: I am using the same data model as I used for consuming the Kafka Message

    Step 1.1: Create an Integration class in the Ent Layer

    Step 1.2: Create two single value properties for Loan number and loan status.

    Step 2: Create a new Kafka data set rule – LoanStatusChangeEvent

    There is a single main tab – Kafka, where you do all the main configurations.

    Connections –

    Here you can select the right Kafka instance rule – LocalKafka

    You can do a test connectivity to verify the connection.

    Topic –

    Here you can either create a new topic or select any existing topic. In our scenario, we will try creating a new topic on the fly.

    Partition keys –

    In the Kafka introduction posts, we saw the importance of Partition keys. We know that each Kafka topic can have one or more partitions to store the messages and the message ordering is guaranteed only within each partition.

    If you have such use case where your ordering plays a critical role, for example: tracking your cab, you must specify a key, say – cabID, so that all messages for same cab goes to same partition, so the geolocation ordering is maintained for the cab.

    In our use case, the consumers wanted to track the order of loan status for each loan number. So as a producer, we are responsible to produce the messages corresponding to same number under same partition.

    So my Partition key is LoanNumber.

    Record format –

    Here we have JSON as the default format and also we have an option to use custom format.

    Based on the format, serialization and deserialization occurs.

    Here in our use case, we will keep it simple and use JSON format.

    Save the data set rule. Now just run the data set rule (we know that we haven’t produced any messages yet), you will see the new topic auto-created in the Kafka server.

    You see a new topic is created with only one partition!! Why?!!

    Because the default configuration is set as 1 in the server.properties file.

    Shall we increase the partitions in existing topic? – Though it is not recommended, we can using alter kafka topic command. I am increasing the partition count to 5.

    Now let’s start producing Kafka messages from Pega.

    How to produce / publish Kafka message from Pega? – Using DataSet-Execute method from an activity rule.

    Step 1: Create a new Utility type activity in work class

    Step 2: Create a new Integration page – EventPage and set the work level values to Int level properties.

    Step 3: Add a Save operation Dataset-Execute method.

    Important note: Make sure step primary page contains the data or JSON attributes to be published.

    Select the right data set name and set the Operation to Save.

    Now a question, Can we publish more than one message with the DataSet-Execute method? – Yes of course it is possible.

    There is a checkbox Save list of pages defined, there you can specify a page list property and publish the list of page messages to Kafka. We will see this at the end.

    For now, we will publish one to one message publishing.

    Step 4: Call the publishing utility in the flow rule following the assignment shape that captures the loan status.

    Now it is time to test 🙂

    Step 1: Create a new Loan processing case.

    Step 2: Capture the Loan number and Loan status.

    Click Submit button.

    Now to check if the messages are published or not, we can manually run the data set rule to browse the messages.

    You see the recently published messages occupy the Partition 1. (The other 3 messages are published by me for testing purposes :))

    Let’s finish this tutorial by publishing 2 messages from a Page list and see if it goes to same Partition.

    Step 1: Update the activity step 2, to add two results in EventsPage of Code-Pega-List class.

    Note: For now I am hardcoding the messages, In real time it can be browse results or report definition results.

    Step 2: In the DataSet-Execute method, use the EventPage.pxResults pagelist property.

    Step 3: Now run the activity manually to publish the messages.

    Step 4: Run and browse the Data set rule to verify if the new messages are published to the external Kafka topic.

    You see the third message occupies the same Partition 1, because LoanNumber is used as Partition key and is ordered as 3rd message position (0,1,2)

    As a summary,

    • Use a Kafka data instance to make a connection between Pega and external kafka server.
    • Create a new kafka data set rule and specify the server details. In the Kafka data set rule, you can also decide to either use existing topic and create new topic on the fly.
    • You can specify partition key that supports ordering of messages for particular entities like same Loan number.
    • Use DataSet-Execute method to publish Kafka message from an activity rule.
    • You can also publish more than one dataset using pagelist properties.
